Indicator info

Proteus 5 MACD(20,200,20)

MACD is one of the simplest and very reliable indicators used by many Forex traders. It calculates and displays the difference between the two moving averages at any time. As the market moves, moving averages move with it, widening (diverging) when the market is trending and moving closer (converging) when the market is slowing down and possibility of a trend change arise. Trading with this MACD indicator includes the following signals:

  • MACD lines crossover - a trend is changing
  • MACD histogram: above zero line - bullish market; below - bearish market
  • MACD histogram: going over zero line - confirmation of a strength of a current trend
  • MACD histogram: diverges from price on the chart - signal of an upcoming reversal

Parameters

The indicator has the following values as parameters, applied to Close price:

  • Fast EMA: 20
  • Slow EMA: 200
  • MACD SMA: 20

The 20,200,20 were the values chosen by our team because the MACD crossovers provide the best long-term trend indications. They are also easier to predict as they don't react as much to real-life events as other values.

If you're looking to trade short-term though, you may want to have a look at the predictions for MACD(12,26,9).

Why trade this indicator ?

  1. The MACD works - this has been proven time and again.
  2. It is an excellent momentum indicator and works for day- and short-term traders to determine the overall direction in which they should trade.
  3. It's even more effective for medium-long-term traders. The longer-period (20 + 200 period) EMAs are compared to determine trends. Here's a nice tip: apply longer-term EMAs to volatile stocks and shorter-term EMAs to relatively stable stocks.
